The Dirt Whispered-Rise Against
“We can’t.”

Those two words were the last thing Sonja wanted to hear.
“What do you mean we can’t? We have to open the door. We have to get them out of there!” She turned to him, her eyes wide with hysteria.

“I mean, not right now. We have another problem on our hands. Ethan was here…”
The whole time Luca was explaining the situation with Ethan and Cadence, and the hunters, he was mentally preparing himself for another assault from Sonja.
And his instincts were right.
In a blink of an eye the whole basement was in disarray, and Luca lay right in the middle of the destruction, panting for air, feeling each and everyone one of his wounds slowly close up.

Sonja’s wrath had been unforgiving this time around, if it wasn’t for Warrick’s voice in the cellar, begging Sonja to calm down, Luca knew he’d be a dead man. And he didn’t blame her, not one bit, he deserved every fiery orb Sonja hurled his way, he’d put Cadence in harm’s way. Again. He was starting to believe Rudolf’s statement more and more, he shouldn’t have come back; he should have left her alone.
“Oh pull yourself together! You’ll live,” Sonja glared down at him as she cast an ice blast spell to stop the fire from spreading.
Luca knew she couldn’t read his thoughts, but she must have smelled the self-pity seeping through his pores.
“Get up. We have work to do!” She hissed at him as she helped him up  from the floor.
Luca hated taking orders from her, hated that she was in his basement, taking control of the situation he clearly had no reign over, but he couldn’t help but be grateful that she was there, and she knew everything now. It was a huge weight off his shoulders; he hadn’t realized how much of a burden it was until now.
“Get the others. I need to know everything, about Ethan and Cadence, and how far you are with your plans,” Sonja clasped her hands anxiously.

“Maybe we should go upstairs, I think it’s best we talked there,” Luca suggested.
But Sonja quickly rounded on him. “I’m not leaving Warrick. You kept him from me for twenty years, I will not be denied any more time with him!”

For a second Luca didn’t know what to say. The hurt in her eyes was too much for him. He’d honestly thought he was protecting her, but now he could see just how cruel he was, letting her believe Warrick was dead all these years when he was right under her nose. Maybe if he’d told her right from the start they could have done something much sooner.
Regrets. He’d spent the better part of the last twenty years avoiding them. Suddenly now he had so many, and he couldn’t understand how they could all surface like this in one night.
“I don’t understand half the shit you’ve done, Luca. But now is not the time or place to fall apart. My daughter is missing, the hunters are probably on their way back with reinforcement, and when the wolves and my coven get wind of what happened here tonight, you and your clan will be dead before sunrise. We need to move fast, that means no tears from any of us, no pity party. So get the others, we have work to do.”
Luca nodded before he spun on his heel. There was really nothing left to say, nothing else to argue about. He could see now why Warrick had fallen in love with Sonja, and why he’d never stopped believing in her, she was a shitty mother in some respects, and an even shittier neighbor, but when it came down to it, she was someone he’d want to have in his little corner when hell broke loose.
He’d almost reached the landing when something made him stop. It was Sonja’s tearful voice as she told Warrick about Cadence.

“-She’s beautiful, Rick, she’s funny, and kind, but so strong. And oh, she loves to dance. I swear when she dances, it’s like all the angels are singing in heaven just for her, and the whole world is right again. I’m so happy you’ll finally see her dance, you’ll be so proud of her…”
As he slowly crept up the stairs, Luca couldn’t hear what Warrick and the others were saying, their voices sounded muffled, but he thought he heard them laugh at some of her anecdotes.

Their laughter (if it was that), soft and fleeting, was a miracle, one that hadn’t occurred in the last twenty years…

Moonlight Falls
Bjorn and the two sisters had just pulled into a gas station in Moonlight Falls when he got a call from Samuel.
He placed him on speaker so they could all hear him.
Samuel sounded shattered as he recounted Luca’s retaliation and told them about Ava’s subsequent surgery.
“And the-” Melissa couldn’t finish her question, it broke her to even think of it, but if Ava was in surgery then surely the baby wasn’t fine.

“It was touch and go for a while, but the baby’s fine,” Samuel eased their fears with his reply.
“So what do we do now?” Bjorn asked as he followed the sisters into the diner, they wanted to grab something to eat before they pushed on to Sunset Valley.
They chose the corner booth, as far from the prying ears of the other diners as possible.
As soon as Bjorn placed Samuel on speaker again, Sarah made her thoughts known. She felt they should proceed with their original plan, return to Twinbrook with reinforcement, but Samuel wouldn’t have any of it. He came very close to losing both Ava and his baby in one night, he’d seen enough bloodshed to last him a lifetime. There’d be no retaliation from him, and none from their alliance in Sunset Valley.

“We are retiring and we’ll live our lives, do everything we’ve always wanted to do,” Samuel murmured on his end.

There was silence at the table as they all sat processing his words.
“We always think revenge will make everything okay. But the dead don’t know they’ve been avenged, and they don’t rest any easier-” Samuel’s voice on the speaker broke through their silent reveries. But before either of them could say anything, Samuel spoke again. “I have to go, Ava needs me. Don’t look back. Never look back.” And with that the line went dead.
As if on cue, the waitress waltzed over to their table to take their order. Melissa and Sarah dealt with her.
Annie, as the sticker on her chest suggested, returned with their steaming plates fifteen minutes later.

Melissa lit another cigarette, while Sarah stared blankly at her plate.
Bjorn absently reached for his, but he barely touched his food in the hour they were there. He was stunned by Samuel’s announcement.  Hunting was all he’d ever done. It wasn’t in his family for generations like most hunters claimed; he was forced into the business by circumstances.
Watching his grandfather, the only family he’d ever had, die, seeing his blood all over their living room floor and walls, had hardened his very core. He was fourteen then, overwhelmed by feelings of helplessness and fear, but he’d sworn he’d get his revenge on the vampires. And he did. Month after month, year after year, from Sunset Valley to Bridgeport. He’d lost track of the number of bloodsuckers he’d staked, but his kill shots were high up there with the best in their business. It never eased his heartbreak, or erase the image of his grandfather’s lifeless eyes, but each time he staked a vampire he could swear he got closer to his nirvana. And now Samuel was asking him to give it all up and live his life. He knew how to hunt. He just didn’t know how to live…
A little while later, they were on the road again, heading towards Sunset Valley. Bjorn cranked up the volume on the stereo as he pushed his old truck beyond its limits, he didn’t want to talk, and he didn’t want to listen to Melissa and Sarah’s comforting words.
As he burned more miles between his past in Twinbrook, and the uncertain future looming in front of him, he couldn’t help but steal a quick look in the rear-view mirror despite Samuel’s words.
He always knew there’d be an ending someday, he just never thought it would feel this…Empty

Note: the gas station/diner can be found here. I posted it on Tumblr, I just forgot to share the link on FB.

Thank you for putting up with my sporadic updates, my little one has started primary school this year, and I  don't have as much free time as I used to.

  1. Poor Sonja how heartbreaking this is for her. Luca did deserve her temper but glad to see she calmed down to Warrick's voice.

Samuel gave good advice but will they listen. Ava I should feel for but I don't, Cadence was innocent in all this so I still say Ava was lucky to get away with just surgery.

    Loved it :)

    1. I think Luca deserved all the abuse he got from Sonja, in a way he's guilty of being a hypocrite, judging Sonja from keeping secrets when he's doing the same thing.

Sam is really tired of hunting and he's determined to leave it all behind, but his cabal might feel otherwise. But for now, we can safely consider them retired.

Ava hasn't done much to earn anyone's sympathy.

      Thanks for reading!

  2. They have to figure out a way to get Cade back still. They are in a bigger mess they they were before. 20 years is a long time, and I agree this all could have been over sooner is Sonja had the proper motivation. She loves Warrick and would have gladly gone against her coven to get him back just as she is now.

This is gonna be a huge deal and the battle lines are being drawn. I don't know how the coven can expect her NOT to help free them knowing he's in there. To ask her for any more sacrifice would be heartless on their part.

I'm glad Samuel is calling it quits. He finally got the wake up call he needed and realized that the hate of an entire race for the misdoing of a few is not worth it.

    1. True, it really all rides on Cadence now, and without her there really isn't much they can do. And I couldn't agree more about Sonja. Had she known that Warrick's in there, she would have helped a long time ago.

For sure, lines have been drawn and there is no going back now. Sonja's pretty much made up her mind to free her husband and she'll destroy anyone who dares to stand in her way.

Exactly, as cruel as Ava's and Luca's actions were, Samuel needed to see it all to make him realize what's important.

      Thanks for reading!

  3. ~ I hope the Hunters heed Samuel's words & keep going & start a new life, there is only heart break if they turn around & go back, worse if they bring re-enforcements!
~ As they have never know the whole truth & imprisoned the wrong Vampires! Now that Sonja knows,it will not take long for the others to find out,if she ever speaks to them again!
~ Sonja is large & in charge! She will help put things right!
~ Family always comes first,so all is good,we still get to read your lovely intriguing stories,as long as you write them, I, for one, will read them!
    ~ Loved it! (",)

    1. -Samuel may be done, but who knows if the others are ready to give it all up. But yeah, let's hope they do listen to him and walk away.
-Sonja reconciling with her coven doesn't seem likely, too much happened between them and a lot of it can't be undone. But now that she knows Warrick's in there, she'll do everything in her power to free him.
-Thanks for your continued support always!

  4. At least Sonja and Luca are trying to work together, and Sonja appears to have come to terms with the fact that Warrick is a vampire. If she can keep her temper under control, hopefully she can be the key player to free the forsaken.

Wow, something tells me that no matter what Samuel said, the hunters will never completely let go of that part of their lives. I wonder if Bjorn is even capable.

Great to see an update! No worries, hun. We all know you'll get em when you can. :)

    1. Yes, they are! Who would have guessed the day would come when they'd consider working together. Sonja has just become a key part to freeing the Forsaken.

Exactly, hunting is all they've ever known, and I don't think it's something they can just give up overnight and walk away from, but for now with everything going on in Twinbrook it will be wise for them to step back and take stock, reevaluate their motivations so to speak,

      Thanks for reading!

  5. Yes it is good to see this back and no matter how sporadic they are still fun to read.

Sonja was really upset there! Looks like if they are going to work together they are going to have to do things her way.

I have a bad feeling about Bjorn...looks like he's going to do something bad here...

    1. Yay, it is good to be writing this again. And I'm glad you still find the updates fun, your interest in my stories keeps me motivated to keep writing.

Sonja was more than just upset, I think she was ready to kill him. Yes, she's taking charge, but Luca won't readily give up his power to her.

LOL, I think you're right to worry about Bjorn, he doesn't seem like he's ready to walk away, but Samuel didn't give him much of a choice.

      Thanks for reading!

  6. Well, I was worried there for a minute that Sonja would singe Luca to nothing but ashes. I have to say, I like this Sonja much better than the other one, even in all this crap she has managed to keep a decent level head.
I feel sorry for the other hunters. Seems like they were raised into hunting thinking it was the only thing to do, now everything they've ever been taught just went down the drain.
Samuel seems like a genuinely good person, hell a saint to still stand by Ava, I just can't help but feel she is not done yet. I hope the baby some how survives and I hope that she doesn't act like an idiot before then. After that, I hope someone puts her 6 feet under...edenz

    1. Yeah, she was ready to singe him, but doing so would not have been in the interest of everyone, especially her husband's!

I'm happy you like this Sonja better.

Yes, hunting is all they've known, and since there wasn't anyone to raise them and teach them different, it ended up being the life they chose. Hopefully they can learn to accept that there is more to life than hunting, so much more to live for.

Despite all her flaws, Samuel loves Ava and it's not going to change, there are things he doesn't agree with, things he wishes he could change about her, but she is his love and he has to make peace with who she is, more so now that they have a child together.

      Thanks for reading!

  7. Hooray, an update!!! Great to see you back and writing again! I hope your little one is enjoying school. :) This was a great chapter, and I do hope that Sonja and Luca can get the door open for Warrick's sake. I also hope that Cadence is okay. Hopefully Bjorn won't do anything rash or foolish and the hunters will listen to Samuel. I love that diner too, thanks for linking where to find it! Looking forward to more!

    1. Hooray! I'm so happy to see you happy over an update. Your enthusiam is encouraging and I appreciate it.

The little one loves school, but lots of work to be done.

Sonja and Luca will try to get the door open. For now Cadence is okay, and she will stay that way, unless she does something to stun Ethan and then all hell will break loose.

Yes, Bjorn's having a difficult time letting go, but without Samuel's approval and that of their cabal he can't really do much. Unless he takes up with another alliance we can safely assume he's retiring.

You're welcome about the diner, and you'll always find it on my Tumblr.

      Thanks for reading!

  8. That was so sweet the way that Sonja told Warrick about Cadence. They have lost so much time together and he didn't get to see his daughter grow up. Sonja is even more powerful than I realized!

So Samuel has had his fill! I don't know if Ava will feel the same way. She didn't seem to care that she was endangering her baby and her life. After she heals, she may want revenge.

    Great update, Val!

    1. Aw, I agree, it was kind of nice and sweet the way she did it. I think that's the saddest part about this whole saga, the fact that Warrick was cheated out of a lifetime with his only child. Hopefully Sonja and Luca can remedy that.

You are right about Ava, Samuel may be ready to let go, but she's not. Samuel will have a very hard time persuading her to let it all go.

      Thanks for reading!

  9. I smiled when Sonja started taking charge, telling Luca what to do. It's like a reversal of the first chapter. And Luca really did help create this situation by keeping so many secrets. I'm glad he realizes it, hopefully it's not too late to make things right.
I was really touched by Sonja telling Warrick about their daughter.

I wonder if Bjorn can really put hunting behind him like Samuel wants. And Ava, too.

    1. Yeah, it was like a reversal of the opening chapter. Luca feels remorse over his actions and since his brother's in there he'll do his best to make things right. Sonja and Warrick have a lot of catching up to do, and I'm happy you found their scene touching.

From all the hunters Bjorn will have a hard time letting go. But Samuel didn't give him much of a choice, this is very likely the end their hunting careers.

      Thanks for reading.

  11. Ouch Luca! That picture looks like he is in some bad pain. (#5) Great shot :)
Sonja "oh pull yourself together! you'll live" *LOL* I could hear her say it.
It will be great once they are out of the sealed room.

Melissa there is lucky she didn't blow everyone up, smoking next to a gasoline pump. Real smart. heh

"But the dead don’t know they’ve been avenged, and they don’t rest any easier" Such a poignant line. Samuel is doing the right thing. Let's see how easily the others let it go.

  12. Go Sonja!! I love that woman. And I don't think she was a shitty mother at all. She simply did her best, and come to think of it, she has the same thinking as Luca: hiding things in order to better protect. And it's not that easy to lie to the people you love.
And I really loved that part about the hunters, how lost and empty they feel. Beautifully done.
