A glowing ember
Burning hot
Burning slow
Deep within I’m shaken by the violence
Of existing for only you
I know I can’t be with you
I do what I have to do’
Do what you have to Do-Sarah Maclachlan
As he paced the living room, Luca kept switching his worried glances between the sleeping form on the couch and April speaking quietly with Andrew in the corner.
Their voices were low, but he could hear their discussion clearly and it pissed him off.
They doubted his ability to lead the clan. And he could see that bringing Cadence to the house after he’d almost ran her over had further intensified their lack of faith in him; they thought he was he being sloppy and getting too entangled up with the enemy.
But what else was he supposed to do? Leave Cadence unconscious on the side of the road?
Cadence stirred and in a flash Luca was kneeling in front of her.
“Ugh!” She groaned loudly as she tried to sit up.
“Hey, slow down,” he gently pushed her back on the couch but Cadence would have none of it.
“What happened?” She asked softly.
Her eyes shone like diamonds in the dim light, and just for a little while, as he gently flicked her hair away from her face, Luca was convinced they were the only light he’d ever need. But as quickly as that thought had snuck up on him, it was gone. He hardened his heart as he straightened up from the floor. Going all mushy for the enemy wouldn’t do!
“You passed out before I could run you over,” he told her quietly.
“Why did you bring me here? Why didn’t you take me home?” It was a reasonable question and Luca just had to smile at how perfectly logical she was at a time like this.
“Sonja isn’t home, and I couldn’t exactly leave you at your doorstep,” he explained.
“I have to go,” Cadence nodded, seemingly satisfied with his explanation.
She was about to say more, but her words faded in her throat when she noticed April and Andrew studying her from their place on the couch in the corner.
“That’s April and Andrew,” Luca told her. But he didn’t shed any light on how they were all related, if at all.
The other two Vampires flashed their pearly whites at Cadence and Luca felt her tense up. He was ninety-nine percent convinced now that she knew what they were. The apprehension in her eyes as she glanced from him to the duo in the corner said it all.
“I’ll show you out,” Luca took her hand and Cadence tried to resist, insisting she could find her own way, but he ignored her.
“Thank you,” she mumbled at the door.
“For what?”
“For not running me over I guess,” Cadence replied.
“Where were you going?” Luca was curious. She’d seemed so out of it, dazed almost when he’d hooted at her to get out of the way. Thank God the brakes on his old pickup truck still worked okay.
“Dance class. With Emme.” She would have said more, but then she suddenly remembered he was the enemy and sharing too many details with him was a big no-no!
“Cadence. I-” Luca wanted to explain, say something to her to erase the disappointment he saw in her eyes. But where would he start explaining it all to her? How would he make her see that perhaps in another life they might have been friends, but in this one they were destined to be enemies and he was after her blood and he’d get it at all costs? It was all so complicated and he wished it didn’t have to be that way.
“I know what you plan to do. I won’t let you.” Her announcement didn’t come as a shock to him. What did surprise him though was the firmness in her voice. She sounded confident, pretty much certain she could stop him. Obviously Sonja had filled her in, but not on everything. He doubted she would be as determined to stop him if she knew her father was withering away in his basement.
“I don’t need your permission.” He returned her unwavering look with a small smile and for a long spell they stood locked in their battle of wills.
“But you do need my blood. And you won’t have it. You’d have to kill me first,” Cadence was the first to give in. Her submission though didn’t give Luca the satisfaction he always got whenever his prey gave in to his will.
“Killing you was never an option. But I will have you.” He drawled softly.
Gazing at her now on this wintry morning, with the weak sun rays hitting the different shades of brown in her hair, Luca realized she was the only perfect thing to come out of the last twenty years. If only things weren’t so damn complicated!
“Right. Keep dreaming.” Cadence laughed in his face, but there was no amusement in her voice. The steely pools in her eyes were harder than any stones Luca had ever touched; he knew she was carefully weighing his words.
They both knew she was in way over her head. But she wouldn’t admit it, not even to herself, and a small part of him admired her determination to oppose him. In fact, he was looking forward to the challenge.
Without saying another word Cadence walked down the crumbling steps and Luca watched her leave.
He wasn’t surprised when she turned back and regarded him. Like their impending battle if she didn’t give in, her question was inevitable.
“Why didn’t you just take it? You had your chance. I was out cold.”
“That’s not how I do things, Cadence. You will give yourself to me. Willingly,” he replied.
“You don’t know that! How can you be so sure?” Her shrill voice betrayed her heightened emotions, despite all her efforts to project an air of calmness.
“Because I know things. And when you’re ready to know things too, I’ll be here.”
He watched his answer throw her into a state of utter disarray and he wished he could undo it all, undo a lot of things, especially that night twenty years ago and what was yet to come.

~ At least she is OK!
ReplyDelete~ I do not know how this will all turn out,it seems so hopeless!
~ The battle of the wills begins! It looks like Luca is going to play fair,he could use mind control!?
~ Loved it,MORE when you can!(",)
Karima,
ReplyDelete-That would have been the end of the story if she'd died. She can't die, not now at least *evil smile*
-It does, I agree, Luca will have to find a way to get her in his corner.
-Yep, it's started. He could just compel her, but then he'd miss out on the challenge, it would be too easy for him.
-Soon, I'm going on vacation for two weeks so I'll have plenty time to work on TF, Seven and Krisis.
Thanks for reading.
What, it was Luca driving???? Well at least he didn't run her over, not quite what I expected when I said he should come to the rescue LOL.
ReplyDeleteLuca is growing sweet on Cadence, how touching. April can't begin to question anyone about judgement. You've given enough hints to her past dealings that means she should not be the first one to throw stones.
I thought her dad was a vamp! Once she finds that out, things might really change for her. She will be pissed at Sonja for not telling her that bit of information. But wow, Sonja locked the man she loved, and the father of her child away to die. That is not helping my opinion of the witches since it was not the elders that killed their loved ones.
Loved the update!
Yummy Luca, a great way to start my morning :)
Jaz,
ReplyDeleteLol, yes it was Luca driving. Someone actually spotted that the van looked very much like Luca's.
He is. Maybe you're right about April, about not throwing stones, but there's still so much more you don't know about her, and her past actions. Maybe when you do you'll change your opinion of her? And I don't think she's throwing stones, her doubts are valid, Luca is growing soft on Cadence and if he lets emotions get in the way it may just derail their plans.
When Warrick went into the cellar he wasn't a vamp, I mentioned this in Volume 1.2 But he was turned, so he is a vampire now.
And regarding Sonja, there is a chapter dedicated solely to her where the events of that night are cleared up. But I can safely tell you she didn't lock Cadence's father in there, and if she could have she would have stopped her coven. And I understand about your opinion of witches.
I'm glad you loved it.
Thanks for reading.
“You passed out before I could run you over,”
ReplyDeleteI am still rolling on the floor laughing! I can picture him, no wait, YOU pictured him with that serious hands-crossed, legs-spread stance and then that sentence!
You seriously cracked me up! My day just got very good! A good laugh can do that to you!
Okay, back to update!
I understand why April and Andrew would doubt his abilities to lead. Whether he knows it or not (and he does!) he is going soft around Cade! I saw into their future before they even met (Remember!), so I felt all loomy and fuzzy inside when he brushed her hair back!
Ohoho, the challenge begins!! On your marks, get set... KISS!!
Haha, I loved this one Val!
I don't know, I found this chapter very romantic.
ReplyDeleteIf I was Cadence I would already be naked in his bed waiting. haha
I am also very curious to meet her father!
....THAT RIGHT THERE!!!! SEEE IT? SEE IT? That's the reason I like Luca so much!
ReplyDeleteLe gasp! Love! <3 Great chapter! So very glad she didn't die, you had me scared! Pphheewww. I <3 Luca, he is like slowly falling for her and it is too damn cute! Very interesting about her father...Very interesting...
ReplyDeleteAmazing chapter! <3
*Relief* Im so happy that she was not badly injured. I had a feeling it was Luca with his red pick up...looked like it. XD
ReplyDeleteThis was a sweet chapter..you focused on Luca and how determined he is to quell whatever budding feelings would sprout up. And Cadence surprised me with her defiance. :} I cant wait to see more of their interaction together.
Those images of her waking up and him so close, my breath caught in my throat how precious it was. :}
Luca is a guy who plays mind games and wins I see! I love that he only wants her blood if she willingly gives it to him. Shows you how confident he is of getting it and also how he throws in that little tid bit at the end...
ReplyDelete“Because I know things. And when you’re ready to know things too, I’ll be here.”
I think Cadence will find herself eager to hear his side of the story now! Short but great chapter!
Jean-Marie,
ReplyDeleteLOL. Yeah, that line, I cracked up when I wrote it too. I'm glad you saw the humor behind it.
Yeah, me too, and you're right, whether he wants to admit it, he is finding himself drawn to Cadence. I love how you saw their future, I can only hope it's good things your foresee?
LOL @ "On your marks, get set... KISS!!"
Your comments always crack me up.
Thanks for reading!
Dutchy,
ReplyDeletethat just gave me a huge smile. I'm so glad you found it romantic, I was going for that.
I don't know about being in his bed, but I'd probably be swooning all over him right about now.
Sadly, The Forsaken won't be much focus for some time, but in the chapter dedicated to Sonja you get to see a bit of him through flashbacks.
Thanks for reading!
Pixx,
ReplyDeleteOKay! I hear ya! LMAO.
Thanks for reading!
Rose,
ReplyDelete*hugs*
I miss you!
You're spot on, about Luca slowly falling forher. Yes, Warrick and Sonja's story is one I'm hoping you'll all enjoy.
Thanks for reading!
Dusty,
ReplyDeleteLOL. I think you're the one who spotted the truck? S
Yeah, I wrote it mainly from Luca's POV and I'm glad you picked up on the buildup of his confusing feelings for Cadence. He will try to squash it for as long as he can, but these things have a way of cropping up unexpectedly.
Cadence is no doubt attracted to Luca, but her loyalty is with her coven, and until she has all the facts, her support will remain with the witches.
Thank you, I tried to capture the tenderness he feels for her, I don't think I could have put it better in words, and I'm thrilled you liked the pictures.
Thanks so much for finding me and giving The Forsaken a chance, I really appreciate your feedback.
Aeon,
ReplyDeleteYou are spot on about Luca and his mind games and he usually wins. As desperate as he is to get her blood, Luca won't use force on her or any trick really.
And yes, that line was meant to piquer her interest, in the next update we'll find out just how much he was able to rouse her interest. But for sure, she'll want to know more about him now and the meaning behind his statements.
Thanks for reading!
In this chapter, I feel sorry for Luca. He really wishes that he could have a different relationship with Cadence, but he can't. He hates that she is in the middle of everything.
ReplyDeleteI love Cadence's spunk! Even though extremely attracted to Luca, she is going to fight being used!
It's going to be so interesting to see how this is developing between them. I wonder if Cadence will be more willing after she finds out that her father is locked up too!
It was short, but so good!
The two should be together something tells me that and after reading this I feel that even more.
ReplyDeleteOnce she knows about her father I think she will want to her but would it be a good idea?
I'm on hols starting next Wednesday can't wait to work on my story more and read more :)
How interesting that Cadence's father is a vampire! And one of the trapped ones in the cellar at that. Now I know why Luca said she'd give in to him willingly. But will she? Or maybe she doesn't know her father and didn't want to. I wonder...so much suspense! Can't wait to read more!
ReplyDeleteNedra,
ReplyDeleteYou're spot on about Luca's conflicting feelings. He does regret that they are on opposite sides.
Cadence has a lot of fire in her, and Luca hasn't really seen much of it, but you're correct in your assessment of her, she is attracted to Luca no doubt, but she also knows where her loyalties lie, she'll support her coven until such time news of her father come to light, and even then she'll have a lot to think about.
Thank you and thanks for reading!
Lckygrl,
ReplyDeleteYou always crack me up with that. I think maybe the next chapter will please you? Just a little?
You're right, once she knows about her father, she'll have so much to think about and decide on, and joining Luca may prove to have consequences.
Yay, me too, mine started yesterday, I also plan to push more picture taking since I'm so ahead with the writing. But I plan to stuff my reading list too.
Thanks so much for reading.
Tender Wolf,
ReplyDeleteYes, that's exactly why he said that. I did mention in Volume 1.2 that when Warrick went into the cellar he wasn't a vampire, but he was turned, and I did mention he had a wife and a baby girl, I guess I wasn't clear on who the baby girl is. My apologies. But yes, once Cadence learns her daddy is locked up in there, she may be more sympathetic to Luca's course. She never knew her father, she was still a baby when he was locked up, so it could go either way, she may not feel anything hence not help Luca since she never knew her father, or she may have longed for a father when she was growing up and knowing she was denied the chance to have that may just push her straight to Luca's arms.
Thanks for reading. I'm on to your update today!
I'm glad she's okay. What a surprise to wake up in Luca's sleepy crumbling mansion. I love how he is not using mind control.. this makes for a very interesting story. ;) I wonder if she will still turn away when she knows her dad is trapped in the basement...? I agree with Luca - why did things have to be so damn complicated?!?! I wonder if they ever met before in another life. That sounds interesting :P
ReplyDeleteLoved this chapter. The sexual tension between those two are amazing. Ahhh, love is in the air.:)
ReplyDeleteI agree that that is a very interesting bit of info about Cadence father! Didn't see that coming at all and am very interested to find out what it's all about. Great update! Thank you so much for sharing your talent :)
Oh, awesome, I love Luca and Cadence. I really can't wait to se how this all plays out.
ReplyDeleteHow cute, Luca's beginning to fall in love with her. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad he's trying to get her to give her blood willingly. Sonja should see that he wouldn't hurt her, he could've been violent a million times before.
